![]() My "new" Asian Heirloom Hog - a gilt! She came from a small farm that didn't have any other pigs on it. So I don't think she even knew she was a pig. Her front toes are a little long, but she isn't having problems with them. She's lovely made with nice small hams, lovely front shoulders and a nice, long loin. She'll become more friendly as I'm tempting her with marshmallows... She loves her new beau, Juan Carlos. They sleep together in a pile of straw. She should have piglets in August or so... You can't see it, but she has the most glorious curly whiskers around her nose... Maybe Curly is a good name for her. She's just lovely. I like her very much, can you tell? ![]() And THIS is Juan Carlos. Not one of his better pictures, but he's watching me intently as I'm too close to his beloved. His father was Juan Piggie and he was an absolute BRICK when it comes to his body style. Juan Carlos has a less blocky style to him, but is still nicely made. Big hams, nice shoulders, long loin. A great beau for Curly. ![]() And this is a recent picture of Snowflake. I've decided to keep her. She's mouthy like her momma, Taffy and her grandmother, MayBelle. But I like her. She likes me and looks like she'll be a nice, strong doe. I LOVE the spots on her. Her grandfather, Jerry, had spots like a giraffe - she resembles him very much. Her daddy, Victor, is another huge Nubian so I'm hoping she's garnered the best of all of them. She's 1/4 Oberhasli and 3/4 Nubian. She makes me want to hug her... Today I took apart the old goat pen and will turn it into a garden. Nice, wonderful compost. Jarradale pumpkins, potatoes, peppers and tomatoes will go in there... I had help from John (Thanks, John), Bug the tractor and my new Carry All for the tractor. Then John and I moved the baby chicks out to the barn where they have more room in an old horse tank and all is well. EXCEPT it began raining and I couldn't finish the new buck pen. Maybe tomorrow...

Gailann Schrader - FrugalistaI live on a Smallholding farm in NorthWest Indiana. I have American Guinea Hogs, an Arabian horse, a punk mule mare, a donkey, dairy goats, honeybees, dogs (one of which is a Livestock Guardian dog learning that cats aren't varmints), cats, guineas and chickens. I've owned geese, meat goats, cattle (on the home farm), sheep, llamas and rabbits. I'm as self-sufficient as possible and enjoy it! Archives
